John Cockrem

Board Advisor

Professor of Comparative Endocrinology (formerly School of Veterinary Science, Massey University)

Professor John Cockrem has made valuable contributions to veterinary science and the advancement of knowledge in comparative endocrinology, including the reproductive performance of penguins.

Professor Cockrem is regarded as an outstanding researcher and environmental advocate. Following retirement, Professor Cockrem is continuing research, mentorship and advocacy work.

John continues to monitor little penguin/kororā colonies at Napier Port, Aotea Great Barrier Island, Mana Island, and Port Tarakohe in Golden Bay - and is assisting Kaikōura kororā with enhanced habitat protection to facilitate suitable nesting habitat (mitigating human and dog disturbance).

Future tracking studies in Kaikōura may also help elucidate foraging impacts from decreased ocean productivity, in regards to increased foraging effort and decreased foraging success (impairing reproductive success and survival).

As a Board Advisor John brings years of cumulative experience to contribute to understanding Kaikōura kororā needs and local penguin conservation efforts focused on guardianship/kaitiakitanga.
